Bike Miles
How many miles is a Sport Bike good for?
I am shopping around for a motorcycle, either a yamaha r6 or Honda Cbr 600rr, and I keep seeing bikes with what appears to be pretty high mileage ( 15k, 20k miles ). How many miles is a bike good for if it is taken care of and serviced properly?
These bike are very well engineered and can last 20 years and still deliver but sizing-up a used sport bike is as tough as sizing up its owner who you likely do not know. Like buying ex-taxi cabs you gotta ask a lot of questions. Try getting Yamaha or Honda dealership mechanics to tell you about those models your interested in and what are the usual or inherent problems to watch out for. Ask especially the problems that come from hard driving and poor maintenance because it maybe the reason for its sale. Sometimes it's expensive like transmission that can be determined by special tests mechanics do. Those results often help the sales team decide which and what models to accept into their used bike section. My '87 V-Max was checked for 2nd gear problems by the Yamaha mechanic in my driveway and on his word the dealership told him to write me a check for the money I wanted. Mechanics know where the weaknesses are on specific models and if you can get some this sort of inside information you're better set to negotiate your own deals knowing what else there is to consider.
